Janet Mock
Mock was born in Hawaii and lived there for most of her life. She was a volleyball player during her high school days. According to her, she was a woman born as a boy. She underwent sex reassignment surgery at the age of 18 when she was studying in the first year in college in Thailand.
Based on her experience as a transgender woman, she submitted a video to the “It Gets Better” project in 2011. In 2012, she started a Twitter hashtag (#GirlsLikeUs) to empower transgender women. She joined the board of directors of the Arcus Foundation in June 2013. It is a charitable foundation that focused on LGBT rights. She was awarded with Sylvia Rivera Activist Award in November 2012. She was named among the “the 30 Most Influential People on the Internet” by Time in 2105.
