Born in Alabama, she was raised by a single mother. During childhood, she was bullied by her classmates for not behaving like a boy. Due to this, she attempted suicide at the age of 11. She went to Alabama School of Fine Arts for learning dance. Later, she joined Marymount Manhattan College in New York and started learning acting.
For the first time after the transition, she appeared as a contestant on the VH1 show “I Want to Work for Diddy”. After that, she appeared on a television series, Transform Me. In 2013, she was seen in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black as Sophia Burset. This was an important role which became a platform for her to raise voice for trans people. Besides her career in acting, she is also known for handling LGBT issues. For her activist approach, she has been felicitated with many awards. She is the first transgender woman who has a wax statue in Madame Tussauds and has been on the cover page of the ‘Time’ magazine.
